What is Pilates?

Pilates is a low-impact exercise method created by Joseph Pilates that focuses on controlled movement, core strength, posture, flexibility, balance, and breath. It can be practiced on a mat or with specialized equipment such as the Reformer, and it is designed to help the body move with more strength, stability, and control.

At its core, Pilates is a mind-body exercise system. That means the goal is not just to complete movements, but to perform them with attention, precision, and coordination. Many Pilates classes emphasize alignment, breathing, and muscular control rather than speed or heavy intensity.

Pilates is usually divided into two main formats: mat Pilates and equipment-based Pilates. Mat Pilates uses bodyweight exercises performed on the floor, while equipment classes use spring-based apparatus such as the Reformer to add support or resistance. Both approaches are built around the same method and movement principles.

People often choose Pilates to improve core strength, posture, flexibility, coordination, and body awareness. It is also popular because it is low impact and can be adapted for different fitness levels, from beginners to more advanced practitioners.

The method was originally developed by Joseph Pilates, who called it Contrology. Over time, Pilates evolved into both classical and contemporary styles, but the central idea stayed the same: using controlled movement and breath to build a stronger, more balanced body.
